Every human overture in the vineyard is an effort to return the land to its pristine state. We honor nature, while farming for the highest standard of fruit. In the winery, we lead with classic techniques hand in hand with minimalist intervention.
Farming
We practice low-input sustainable farming techniques in the vineyards to produce wines of character and immediacy while remaining guardians of these environments. In perpetuity, we will prioritize our vines' health and surroundings. Our ongoing certifications validate our commitment — California Sustainable Vineyards & Winery and Fish Friendly Farming.
Born in Patzimaro de Aviña in the Mexican State of Michoacan, Javier Aviña joined Peter Michael Winery in 1991.

Javier has been the essential force behind fruit of consistently high quality and character. His constancy is matched by a deep, often intuitive understanding of the land and each vineyard's disposition.
Vineyard Teams
All three estates are tended to throughout the growing season by a dedicated team. Many have been with the winery for years, providing a deep understanding of each vineyard, block, and vine.
Winemaking
Peter Michael’s founding vision of terroir-driven, handmade wines in the classic European tradition comes alive under the direction of our winemaker Robert Fiore. We use time-honored winemaking methods - hand sorting of grapes, native yeasts, French oak barrels, and bâtonnage. Every bottling is an expression of the skill of the winemaking team and the terroir of the land.
Wines
Winemaker Robert Fiore is a professional geophysicist and Earth Scientist, having investigated geologic basins and rock outcrops around the world.
Robert Fiore
During his studies, inspired by an interest in wine, he explored wine regions around the world. In 2001, he made his way to California where he earned his master’s degree from UC Davis in Viticulture and Enology.
Winemaking Team
The winery has a history of supporting new winemakers, many of whom are now highly acclaimed producers—however, the success results from the support provided by a unified and committed team. Sean, Emily, and Rafa closely collaborate with Robert, offering years of experience working with our vineyards. Collectively, they incrementally improve quality, while always revealing the best expression of the vintage.
